THE SIX COMPONENTS THAT MAKE UP THE LEAD TIME
A large power transformer's delivery date is driven by whichever of these is currently slowest at a given manufacturer:
- Grain-oriented electrical steel (GOES) for the core: produced by a small number of steel mills worldwide. This has been the single most cited constraint since 2023 — capacity additions take years, and GOES output is now allocated across transformer manufacturers, motor makers and renewable energy equipment simultaneously.
- Copper windings: exposed to copper price volatility and, at high demand, to winding-shop capacity rather than raw material availability.
- Bushings: high-voltage bushings are a specialised sub-component with only a handful of qualified global suppliers. A bushing shortage can delay an otherwise-ready transformer by months.
- On-load tap changers (OLTC): precision mechanical components, effectively single- or dual-sourced for many transformer classes.
- Large-format tank fabrication and testing capacity: physical factory floor space and high-voltage test bay availability, which cannot be expanded quickly.
- Engineering and design slot: for custom specifications (ANSI/IEEE for US buyers sourcing from EU manufacturers, for example), the engineering queue itself can add months before fabrication even starts.

Two transformers with the same nameplate rating from two different manufacturers can have delivery dates a year apart — not because one factory is faster overall, but because one is waiting on bushings while the other already has its tap changer secured. Buyers who ask "what's your lead time" get a single number back. Buyers who ask "which component are you currently waiting on" get the information that actually predicts whether that date will slip.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PROCUREMENT
Standard specifications move faster than custom ones, because standard designs can draw from pre-committed component slots rather than starting the engineering and sourcing sequence from zero. For buyers who can accept a manufacturer's standard design — rather than a fully bespoke specification — the lead time difference can be significant. For buyers who need US ANSI/IEEE compliance from a European manufacturer used to IEC standards, the engineering re-specification step alone can add meaningful time, which is why it pays to ask about it explicitly rather than assume it's included in the quoted lead time.
